Prepping for Juicing!

Frozen Smoothie Creation Packs

Frozen Smoothie Packs

If you’re reading this post then you are on the verge of creating an awesome healthy lifestyle and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned on my journey!

I’ve come to love meal prepping because it’s such an easy way to eat healthier, especially if you tend to be on the go. My husband and I have decided to juice for 1 week to detox our bodies and reboot our internal system. However, if you’re like me and have not lived a true healthy lifestyle in some time, (or never at all) you may have moments where staying consistent seems impossible. I realized that convenience is the simplest way for me to stick with any plan. I’ve found that preparing smoothie packs to be frozen and juiced whenever I’m ready is extremely convenient. It definitely beats grabbing a unhealthy snack or meal because there are simple not enough healthy fast food options around.

So here it is!

What to get and where to go?

The Farmers Market

My husband took me to a local Farmers Market where we bought fresh produce. I didn’t know that they were NOT organic or locally grown until I got there and asked the man selling them. For some reason I was under the impression that people who sell produce at farmers markets actually grew the fruits and veggies at their own farm. WRONG! Well some may, but a lot of them don’t. I was told that the produce is the same as the grocery stores. The only difference is, you get a lot more for your buck. And it is true. The baskets were filled with LARGE fruits and veggies and because of the sizes and portion, we seemed to save more money.  I am thinking about trying our local “Moms Organic Market” grocery store to compare quantity and pricing because their “organic” quality is always healthier.

Grocery Store Produce

We went to the market with a budget of $50 and was VERY pleased with the amount of items we got knowing that it would make about a week’s worth of juice / smoothies. We also bought a box of 20 Quarter size ziplock freezer bags to store the produce in the freezer after we prepared them.  After juicing with one of the packets, I realized that one prepared frozen packet can actually serve two people or make two 32oz. drinks. So if only one person in your house hold plans on juicing everyday, then about $25 at the farmers market would give you a good weeks worth of fruits and veggies to drink.

Now, if you’re ready to prepare your Smoothie Juice Packets, you can follow the simple steps below.

Step 1. Choose Your Recipes

Below are some of the recipes we used. Feel free to use these or any others you may find, and make adjustments as you feel necessary. I found many great recipes on Pinterest. (Be sure to follow me on my “Liquid Goodness” board !)

Step 2. Prepare your Grocery list and go Shopping!

You can buy any type of produce that you desire based on your own desired recipes, taste, etc.

Here is what we bought.

  • Kale
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Zucchini
  • Pears
  • Oranges
  • Cabbage
  • Grapes
  • Lemons
  • Almond Milk

Next time I will also get:

  • Spinach
  • Blueberries
  • Mangos
  • Ginger
  • Pineapple
  • Coconut water
  • Omega 3 & Fish oil

Dry Ingredients  (optional)

  • Chia Seed
  • Flax seed
  • Protein Powder
  • Yogurt

Step 2. Label your Bags

I try to stay organized so that I  know what we will drink at what time of the day. So I labeled our bags with a permanent marker, “Monday Breakfast”, “Monday Lunch”, “Monday Dinner”, and so on until Saturday. Sunday is our rest / cheat day where we will eat anything we want (within our own limits of course)

Make sure you label “add milk, or ice, or sweetener” to the bag so that when you pick it up you won’t have to run looking for the recipe. The point is you want to save time, so make sure everything is ready.

Step 3. Cut all the fruits and vegetables into small chunks or squares for your juicer or blender. Wash everything of course. I kept the items separate so that it would be easier to find when packing the bags.

Step 4. Prepare the Awesome Packs

This of course was the funniest part. Put some music on and get to it! Keep your recipes out and stuff each bag according to your desired items. Some of our recipes called for spinach which we did not have, so I substituted that for kale.

Extra Tips & Tricks:

Why Frozen?

If you freeze your items, then you don’t need to add ice. If you add ice, you will still have to add another liquid, such as water, milk, or juice to keep your juice a nice liquid consistency. Too much water may leave your smoothie or drink watery and take away from the overall taste of goodness. It is possible to buy frozen fruits at the grocery store, which I’ve done before and thought was fine. However, it only makes sense to have your own FRESH frozen produce for better health components. Depending on the power of your blender or juicer, using ice or frozen items may not be possible.  You may actually have to take the packs that you want to use for that day and defrost it in the fridge the night before.

Blender

I’ve done a bit of research and came to the conclusion that the Nutri Ninja was a better choice. I thought about the Magic bullet, but after reading reviews and testing my friend’s Ninja I was sold. It can also make Hot drinks like soups as well. I was blessed with a Nutri Ninja Auto IQ Blender which I think is awesome so far! It has 900 watts and is pretty powerful (but a bit loud). You can purchase it at Walmart, Target, and other department stores anywhere from $80-$120.

Here is a link with more details about it.  Nutri Ninja

Do your research before purchasing. There are different sizes and models and you want to get the blender that will best fit your individual needs.

We also have a Breville Juicer and liked the juicing aspect but almost hated the amount of clean up required. Plus it separated all of the fruits and veggies skin which is a very nutritious part of the food itself. SO I may actually be selling it soon (we haven’t touched it in over a year).

Consistency

I prefer my juice drinks to be on the smoother and thinner side so I’ll usually add at least a cup of water. Like anything else if you like your drinks thicker, than use less water, milk or juice. Many recipes call for milk or yogurt which will help thicken your drink.

Sweet

I LOVE sweet things, but… we’re living healthier now, so we have to make wiser choices as to what to  use to make our taste buds happy. If you like sweeter drinks, than add more sweeter fruits. Pears, Apples and Strawberries always seem to work great. If you are making a more veggie type of drink with less fruit, than you can add honey, vanilla extract or even Stevia for a sweeter taste.

Pray

I personally believe that we should take every matter to God. “Acknowledge me in all your ways, and I will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:6  Because I was not accustomed to eating healthy and exercising, I knew that this lifestyle change might be a bit of a struggle for me. However I know that WITH GOD ALL things are possible.

There is a great article which speaks about how prayer can lead to a “Better, Health and Longer Life.”

One thing I pray about is staying consistent in living this healthy lifestyle. Like most people, it’s easy to start a good habit and do it well for a short period of time, but we tend to start slacking off and eventually quit completely.  So one of my prayers is simply this: “Lord God, Thank you for the revelation and wisdom in understanding that my body is your temple and I must take good care of it. Heavenly Father, please give me the will to continue to live this lifestyle that you want me to live. Let it be not only easy for me, but enjoyable.”

I encourage you to pray for strength, consistency and good health during this exciting part of your healthy lifestyle journey.

I am apart of a morning call with a few of my friends. We’ve decided to wake up early and pray together about living a healthy life and whatever else is on God’s heart. (If you’re interested in joining in, please feel free to contact me so that I can give you the contact information and time.)

Resources

There are many places and people who are offering a wealth of information about eating, juicing, and living healthy. A few things I have found that were super inspirational are listed below:

1. “Fat, Sick, and nearly Dead” Documentary – We watched this on Netflix

2. “The 10 day Smoothie Challenge” – J.J. Smith

Results & Benefits

  • HEALTHY, LONGER LIFE! The fact that we are replacing our normal processed, fatty, fast, restaurant foods with the required fruits and veggies we need to live healthy and long is a MAJOR plus!
  • Convenient: Doing this is so much more convenient.
  • Energy: You will have more energy (which I desperately needed)
  • Yummy, Fresh and Delicious.
  • Plant-Eaters God created all of the species, animals, plants, water, sky etc. When He made humans, he made us as herbivorous. It is proven by the way are bodies are made up, that we were created to eat more plants and not meat. This is obviously why scientist, and nutritionist say we MUST have more fruits and vegetables in our diet (The way our teeth, jaw structure, and the rest of our body is made up proves this.)

Here is a quick video of our first juice experience with this blender. (Use enough water, or milk! LOL)
